Tales of the Unexplained
Since before the launch of KINDRED SPIRIT, I thought what better way to get into the mood for a book about ghosts and the uncanny bond between identical twins, than to read about true supernatural & paranormal incidents submitted by readers.

9/11 Premonitions
For 10 years prior to 9/11, I had many reoccurring dreams of airplanes exploding. Sometimes they’d explode in mid-air, sometimes they’d crash into buildings, sometimes the sea. There were also times that I dreamed of plane crashes and within a few days a plane would go down. I’d always feel such dread at these dreams. They were so real, I’d have to say to myself it’s only a dream. But some of the times, it would come true.
I live on the pacific coast. The day before 9/11, I dreamed about a plane crashing in a field. I went to a white farm house off the side of the field near some trees to get help. There were people in the farm house, but no one seemed to notice me. They all seemed out of place and were all talking excitedly to each other. I told everyone a plane had crashed outside. I received no reaction. I saw an old, white cordless phone. I tried calling 9-1-1 over and over, but the “1” wouldn’t make the dial tone sound. I asked those around me to “call 911, this phone doesn’t work” … I was completely upset and kept saying, someone call 9-1-1.
My alarm clock went off around 6:30ish for work on 9/11/2001. It was set to the radio. Instead of hearing music, I woke up to the sound of a news reporter saying a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. My husband and I jumped up and turned on the TV to see the World Trade Center had been struck. Then we watched in horror as the other tower got hit.
I cried and cried, “why, why, why” Later in the day, I was stunned to find out another plane, flight 93 had crashed in a field… just like my dream. I felt sick. Still do. Also, was freaked out about the date being 9/11 and remember the darn broken phone and trying to dial 911. To this day, I don’t know why I had these dreams. And to this day, I have not had another airplane dream. They stopped after 9/11. As God as my witness, this is a true story.

P.S. – I’ve had premonition dreams all my life. But this is the only one that was reoccurring.
Ground Zero Premonitions
Nothing supernatural happens to me, so I think, it's all bunk, for children and teenagers, none of its real, you're born, and what you see is what you get. Then:
I work within five miles of ground zero, in Secaucus, New Jersey. Three months before 9/11 I start getting these weird "flashes" — two to three second mini petit mal "episodes" where I feel grievously injured, crushed, split open. Once every two weeks goes to once a week goes to twice a week — each one the same, I am hurt in an unimaginable way. I think its a prelude to something so I start driving carefully.
Then 9/11 happens, and that ends it. Now you tell me what the hell happened!

The Lady in White
The building where I used to work had been a funeral home in its former life. One day while running a group, I glimpsed the figure of a woman in white with long blond hair. I went to the hallway where she disappeared. I asked a client who came up the stairs if he'd seen anyone. He said, "You mean that lady in white." This was not my first sighting of the paranormal, but it was the first time someone else had validated it.

Haunted Apartment
This happened to me when I was about ten years old and home alone. Mom was at work while my step dad was overseas as a merchant marine. I was sitting on Mom's bed watching TV when out from under the bed rolls a ball across the room and under the TV stand. I thought that perhaps a mouse running across the baseboard ran into the ball making it roll. Then I began to be afraid and got up to leave the apartment. As I reached to unlock the door that led out of the apartment I heard a bang that came from my room. That's when I saw a suit case come crashing down onto my bedroom floor. I was so afraid I fumbled with the lock a few more seconds until, finally, with the door unlocked I slammed it open and ran out the apartment and down the stairs as fast as I could. I've never been so afraid in my entire life. I am now 57 years old and a true believer in other forms of realities and always maintaining faith in God and knowing that He is in charge.

Banshee Scream
It all started in this house I used to live in. It would happen every night, almost without fail. I was about seven, when it all began. I would lie in my bed awake, when suddenly a noise like wind, as if heard from a distance could be heard. That was all the warning I had. I had one second to get into the fetal position under my covers before the screaming started. But not just screaming, otherworldy unnatural screaming, like the scream banshees are said to have. Not only that but it felt as if something powerful was holding me down against my will. But nothing was there. I would scream in sheer terror until my parents came in, which took a little while as they where heavy sleepers. Then it would stop. This kept occuring over more than a year.

The Crow
My experience happened about five years ago, on the day that my father-in-law died. I used to work at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as a Sterilising Technician, my department was located on level two, which was at the time a dungeon (it has since been renovated) and the only way you could get in there was via the elevator.
On this particular day, which was a Sunday, I was working and my father-in-law was in the Intensive Care Unit on level six, in a deep coma. I knew that he did not have long to go so in between breaks I would go up to be with him.
Around one o'clock in the afternoon I looked over at his monitors and realised that his heart beet was starting to fail, and I realised that he was dying. I called the Sister in Charge over and told her that I needed to go back down to my Department to change into my street clothes and pick up my bag, and then I asked her to ring me if anything happened in the time that it took me to get ready.
Now, where my Department was located at the time was literally a dungeon, there were no windows, no doors, nothing, the only way you could get in and out of the place was through the elevator.
When I got to my department I went to the tea room to have a cup of coffee. As I sat down to drink it the phone rang. The call was from the Sister in Charge telling me that I needed to get upstairs as soon as possible. Outside the Department door we used to have a garbage bin where we discarded our theatre hats and shoes at the end of our shift. On this particular day, as I was leaving the Department after the phone call from the Sister, A black Crow was perched on top of the garbage bin. Now remember what I said about this place being a dungeon with no way in or out of it?. As I came out of the door the Crow looked at me and then flew off around the corner to where the elevators were, then it came to a stop on the floor near the elevators. I was so surprised that at first I did not know what to make of it. The Crow waited for me to round the corner to the lifts and for me to get in. As the doors to lifts were shutting I saw it fly of in the opposite direction and disappear from view.
An hour later as I was leaving the Intensive Care Unit with my husband I told him what had happened and we decided to go and check out where the Crow had gone to, but as I suspected there was no sign of it anywhere.
To this day I still don't know how the Crow got in there or how it got out as there was no way it could have done either.
Over the years I have had many strange experiences, but this one was by far the strangest.

Real Ghosts on the Movie Set
Last year, I directed a feature film, CONJURER, in Whitesburg, Georgia. Several crew members experienced strange occurrences at the 350 acre farm where we were filming.
Early one morning, set dresser Jon C. Kay was startled by a horse whinnying behind him. He whirled around, and found nothing there.
Production designer Roland Heart was working in the 1800s farmhouse late one night, when he heard a strange, repetitive creaking sound in the downstairs bathroom. “The sound was coming from the bathtub,” said Roland. “It sounded like it wasn’t underneath the tub, but inside it. Only the tub was empty, and there was nothing there.”
One afternoon, camera operator Todd Marshall heard a woman crying on the floor above. He climbed the narrow staircase to investigate, but no one was there.
On another afternoon, Marshall glimpsed strange figures in the house. “For a brief moment, I could see three Confederate soldiers in their dress uniforms, kind of like a quick hologram or projection on smoke. The oldest was an officer with kind eyes and a gold sash around his waist, and two other soldiers in gray uniforms behind him. I blinked and they were gone.”

The Lady in the Closet
In almost fifty years, I have never told anyone this story, but it has never left my mind. When I was four years old, I witnessed a spirit visitation that has puzzled me all my life. I did not know then, nor do I know now what the meaning of the incident was, yet it did occur and I hope that someday, I will know why. My mother was recently divorced from my father. She, my two brothers, my sister and I lived in a small house. One night mother was entertaining a gentleman friend in our dining room. I do not think it was a date, rather just a friendly visit, but I don't really know for sure. Anyway, they were sitting at the dining room table talking. My mother was sitting with her back to my bedroom door, which was just off the dining room. My bedroom had a closet, the door to which was closed, as usual. I was in the bedroom and the closet door opened. An old lady, dressed in old fashioned clothes (I know now) walked out of the closet and through my small room. She went into the dining room and stood behind my mother. While she stood there, my mother's hair turned slowly white. My mother and her friend continued their conversation, oblivious to the event. My mother's hair returned to its natural color, the lady turned and went back into the closet. Momentarily, I looked into the closet and everything was as it should be. There was no old lady and my mother and her friend still continued her conversation.
I never told my mother or anyone else what had happened. I guess I thought if I told my mother she might be frightened and there seemed to be no harm done, nor anything that could be done, so I kept it to myself. To this day, I wonder what that incident meant.

Doors, Opening and Closing
When my mother passed away we were heart broken. But the part that got me was that in the same month of her passing I was sitting in the kitchen with my boyfriend at the time.
It was late at night already and the kitchen door was secured when all of the sudden it flew open and stayed open, now in our beliefs we say that when someone alive leaves the door open behind them their tales are long...
Now, with the door flying open, I made a comment to say that it is cold and the person that came in should please close the door and asking if the persons tale is long?
In a split second the door flew closed.
My boyfriend and I looked at each other and left the kitchen....

The Locked Room
About a year after my brother died my mother and I were doing some spring cleaning in our home. I was going in and out of my room, talking to my mother, moving things out of my closet into our attic. The door never even shut fully. No one was home except for my mother and I. Our rooms are side by side, so I would walk in and out with the door cracked slightly open. I went to use the bathroom which is also on the same floor and returned to find my bedroom door was locked. I have two type of locks on my bedroom door. The lock on the door knob and the lock that slides across the door which is only accessed if someone is in the room on the other side of the door. I knew I didn't lock the door, but just the same I logically thought to myself maybe my hand touched the door knob lock and the wind must of shut the door. Even though no windows were open. I shoved credit cards in the door a butter knife, nothing would open the door. It seemed odd to me that the door would not open with anything I used, so I decided to get a ladder and crawl into my bedroom which is on the second floor. I climbed up to my window and let myself in. I discovered that my door was firmly locked from the inside. No one else was in my house. (Not to mention how high my bedroom is from the ground.) No one was hiding. I cleaned out my entire bedroom that day. Not to mention how high my bedroom is from the ground.

Walking Shoes
After my grandmother passed away, my parents and I went to spend some time with my grandfather in his ranch house. One afternoon my dad, grandfather, and I went out--leaving my mom alone in the house. My mom was cleaning when she heard a strange noise. She actually thought it sounded like my grandmother walking (my grandmother was diabetic which caused her to shuffle her feet when she walked). My mom looked up and saw a pair of my grandmother's shoes walk by. My mom loved my grandmother, but she was a little freaked out by this! She ran outside and waited for us to return. She told my dad and grandfather what happened, but they did not believe her and attributed her "experience" to stress. When they went inside the house, they noticed the piano music was scattered on the floor. That night, as my grandfather was getting ready for bed, he opened his closet to put his clothes away. They had gotten rid of all of my grandmother's clothes but there, on the floor of the closet, was a pair of her shoes.

The Séance
When I was in 7th grade my best friend, Maria, had a slumber party. Maria and I decided that we would have a séance and, as a gag, scare the other girls. We even got Maria's younger brother involved. Maria and I could not wait to pull our little prank! After what seemed like an eternity we had our séance. We turned out the lights, sat in a circle, and joined hands. Maria was trying to "bring back a spirit" when all of a sudden her brother jumped out from behind a door, yelled, and ran around the room. All of the girls screamed -- except for Maria and I who couldn't help but laugh!
After Maria's brother went upstairs we decided to have a "real" séance, without any gags. For some reason, we decided to bring back Billy the Kid (don't ask me how we picked him). We were trying to "summon" his spirit when the door (which had been locked) flew open, a big gust of wind blew in (mind you it was a hot, humid, summer night), and what looked like 2 green, glowing eyes appeared on the wall. Now we were all screaming and quite scared. Maria's brother was up in his room and there was no way a kid could have pulled off a trick that elaborate.
I have never again been part of a séance.

The Grandparents
My grandmother who had been raised Amish, believed in the supernatural. She had an uncanny supernatural ability, and believed in tokens and omens. I witnessed incidences of her ability.
I would spend the night with her as she lived only three houses from us and when my grandfather died she was lonely and had cancer. That in itself is a horror story, but I digress. She would lock all the doors at night before we went to bed. She also had a border who was a younger divorced man. After my grandmother told us all that the back door was standing open every morning when she got up for several days in a row,Wayne decided to double check. He assured us that the door was locked, but still it would be open again the next morning. After the week of having the door open my grandfather's brother who lived on the street behind them died of cancer. We believed grandma then, and yes the door stayed locked after that.
The funny thing is my grandfather was a hard headed German who did not believe in ghosts, and yet he is the one who experienced them twice in his life. Once when he was a child, he walked down to his grandmother's house and walked in the front door to see her, his grandmother standing on the staircase. It took him a second to remember that she had passed away just days before, and then she vanished.
My greatgrandfather lived with my grandmother and grandfather, until he died. He would go out to the Dodge garage, I am assuming it was called this, because at sometime before I was born, they must have had a Dodge! My grandfather pulled into the driveway after work, to see his father walk out of the garage and head into the basement door, where he also hung out at times. Grandpa quickly remembered his father was dead! He got out of the car and took chase, to of course find the basement empty! These are just a few incidences of supernatural events in my families lives.

Golden Light
On the night of my mother's funeral I was alone in the house in Hamburg. I believe my brother, sister-in-law and my dad went to one of my uncle's homes in town. I don't know why I didn't go with them. I was talking to a friend on the telephone in the kitchen, which was on a little desk by the doorway that led into the dining room. From there one had a clear vision through the kitchen to the breakfast nook and to the large windows. I looked over at the windows and saw a bar of light; it wasn't a willowy shaft of light; it was a dense golden bar of light. There was nothing natural about it. I got panicky and told my friend what was going on. I don't know how long it was there, probably less than a minute. The point is that there was not one possible source of that light in the blackness at the back of our house. I have always believed that it was the spirit of my mother and think that had I been less fearful and more relaxed I might have had a very moving experience. It never happened again.

Flickering Light and Cold Spots
I had plenty over the years, but the one I'm going to tell about is what happened to my mother and me after my father passed away. Exactly as we found out later he died at the hospital, the ceiling light in the bedroom he and my mother shared began to blink on and off. it continued this for three days. Suddenly there would be cold spots when the wall gas heater was on, my mother woke up on the couch and found herself staring into my father's face and I swore I saw something white disappear around the corner of my eye, heading into the bedroom area. finally, after the three days when we buried my father's body at the cemetery, we came home to the light working again normally and nothing else happened. And if you think about how in the bible they say about burying someone three days after the death they supposedly go to Heaven, this might say something.
